Why do leaves change colors ?~Fall Leaves Activities for All Ages~

Fall leaves make me want to create something!

They’re some of the most beautiful artworks in nature.  Nearly every color can be found.  Even here in central Texas, our leaves have begun to be painted in warm yellows and oranges.   While doing some reading for this post, I realized that there were lots of great ideas for activities to learn about leaves for the Littles crew, but not as many for the older crowd.

Hopefully, you and your family will enjoy this mini fall leaves “unit”.  Really, this is just a list of activities and reading, and would be a great days activity for a Friday afternoon (or Tuesday or any day when the crisp fall weather causes us to all want to be outdoors)…or on a busy week (like Thanksgiving)…or just any day (because YAY you homeschool and can do that!!).

*If you’d like to listen to some lovely, quiet music while you scroll through these ideas, Autumn by George Winston is one of my all time favorites!
Or if you’d like a classic, Linus & Lucy: The Music of Vince Guaraldi  by George Winston is nice.

*Why Do Leaves Change Colors Anyway?*

*You can start with this section or skip right to the activities –
I learned a ton about what makes leaves change colors and the types of trees
with the most vivid colored leaves.

-Before you begin, it might be fun to ask your kids why/how they think leaves change colors.
You could write down their initial answers and then review them after the day.
Depending on the ages of your children this can be quite entertaining.

– You may also like to take a quick walk before this lesson to collect some leaves to have on
hand for visuals.

Making Memories

What is your happiest childhood memory?

Really.
Stop and think hard.
Close your eyes and remember.
Think of the all the little details.
It will make you smile.
Even today.

Ever think of how your own children might answer this question someday?

Every day, we have the opportunity to create memories with the people we love.
It doesn’t have to involve expensive vacations or extravagant gifts…just some thought
and some time and lots of love.
Get creative !

I have two (update: THREE😱)  kids in their 20’s.
Every year they ask if we can still carve pumpkins.
It’s a tradition.
They bring their friends…we laugh…throw pumpkin guts…make a huge, sticky mess…
toast pumpkin seeds…eat snacks…and watch “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”.

I don’t know about how life changing or meaningful any of that may be,
but every year,  I take a deep breath,
and let the crazy mess begin,
and know we’re making another memory.

Need some easy memory making ideas today?

Here’s a list that I absolutely LOVE,   just to get you started.

Fun fall activities for families
Fun Fall Family Activities!

Fall is my Friday Favorite today.  🙂
I LOVE FALL !
The cooler weather, breezy and brisk;
the beautiful colors,  reds and rusts;
cozy sweaters, hot spiced ciders, and roaring bonfires, oh my!
It just makes me want to get outside.
The change of seasons seems to bring some kind of refreshment to the soul.

This Friday’s favorites are all fall…
**Note:  I think you can enjoy these ideas most anywhere in the country even if it’s
85* like it is today here in Texas.   Alas, I lit my pumpkin candle & sipped my pumpkin spice coffee while writing this post.   It is raining (BIG change), and  it’s 85* today.  That is a change from 105* at least.   It’s fall, y’all !    🙂
