Introduction to the Book of Revelation

Let’s study Revelation together!

Have you wondered if this book is too hard to understand?
Worried that it might be too depressing and chaotic?
This study will prove you wrong and reassure you in the BEST ways!

To begin- I am not a Bible scholar or an expert on the book of Revelation.
I’m just a Christian sister who has spent a lot of hours praying, reading, studying, researching, asking questions, and digging into this amazing part of the Bible!  I have found so many faith building, life changing TRUTHS in these pages, I wanted to share it here!

This study of the book of Revelation grew out of a gathering of the most wonderful women around my dining room table.  Eight years ago we started studying the book of John together and have found in that time such nourishment to our souls, we have just kept on going!   We don’t use any kind of written study guides, just Word of God.  We ask ALL the questions, and dig deep.  We all participate in the conversation and learning (meaning there is always room to disagree, debate, and discuss)!  What I am posting is simply my notes from our study… so there could be some rabbit trails you can skip if you want.  You’ll also find lots of references to resources like Bible Hub, and some comments, quotes, and timelines from teachers way more learned than I am.  I aim to always give them credit, but there could be an occasional quote that I miss.

We’re still working our way through Revelation verse by verse, slowing way down, and looking at the words, the Old Testament connections, the symbolism, the historical context, and most importantly, what this book reveals about Jesus!

I’m sharing what I’ve discovered through my own study, but I don’t expect everyone to agree with every conclusion. There is room here for questions, different perspectives, debate, and discussion. My hope is that these pages will encourage you to open your own Bible, dig into the Word for yourself, and join our conversations!

So are you ready for this study?  Or are you still unsure?
Here are a few of the concerns we had around the table BEFORE we started this study.
Maybe you have a few of them too.

How are you feeling about STUDYING the Book of Revelation?
Are you super confident and excited to read this book once again and gain the promised blessings?
Yay!  I can’t wait to hear your thoughts and what you are learning together with us!
BUT if you feel like you’re jumping into the deep end of a swimming pool without your floaties, don’t be intimidated, just HANG ON and keep reading!

My own feelings were… Who am I to
TEACH this book?
I don’t have a theology degree.  I am not a Bible scholar.  I’m am simply believer in Christ Jesus who loves the Word of God and has experienced first hand how it has changed my life… how it is ALIVE every single day in powerful and new ways!
The question really could be asked who am I to teach ANY book of the Bible?
Paul’s exhortations to Timothy were encouraging to me.
*2 Timothy 2:15-
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”
*2 Timothy 3:16-17-
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Are you wondering if you can really
UNDERSTAND this book?
Most of us do not have PHDs in theology (maybe ?!), and especially not in Bible Prophecy.  But just like I prayerfully thought through my own insufficiencies to study Revelation, we could answer the same way-
How are we able to UNDERSTAND any book of the Bible?

Again, Paul with the encouraging word-
*2 Timothy 2:7-
“Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.”  And if the Father has enabled us to understand that He has sent us salvation through Christ, surely He will give us understanding as we study an entire book devoted to revealing Jesus more and more!

And from Jesus and John-
*John 14:26-
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. ”
*1 John 5:20-
“We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

So HOW do we start?

We will study this book TOGETHER, you and me and the Holy Spirit to help us, just as we study any book of the Bible!
We will take it slowly, verse by verse.  One bite at a time.  And we will do it BY FAITH!

*Hebrews 11:3-
“By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.”

By FAITH we UNDERSTAND
that Jesus spoke the universe into existence in the BEGINNING!
And so… BY FAITH we will UNDERSTAND that Jesus is coming again, and at His command the universe will be renewed and Eden restored in the END!

Still, there will definitely be things in this book that we will NOT understand fully.

Here’s how we can approach it maybe.
When your children were little, did they ever have a book or a movie that they wanted you to read/see over and over and over again, till you could almost quote the whole thing in your sleep (and likely did lol)?

This study is kind of like that…
imagine that our Father is telling us the very BEST story EVER!
It’s a bit more than our childlike minds can understand the first few times through, but it is fascinating and amazing.
And so we ask Him to read it to us over and over again… and little by little we start to see the plot coming together. We start to know all the characters.  And there are whole sections we can almost quote by heart!

I once heard a preacher say that the book of Revelation is more like a STORY, and not like a PUZZLE BOOK.
When the time comes that all the symbolism and events in this book tie us up in knots, we can step back and look for how the pictures in this book all unfold into one big picture of JESUS!

When we see the pages with pictures of the  Antichrist and his minions, we can LOATHE the EVIL of the despicable, monstrous beast and then find comfort HOPE in his eternal defeat!

And when we turn the pages and see the horrid persecution of our brothers and sisters by the beast, we can CHEER them to just persevere a little bit longer, because we have read the page that shows their eternal victory, and we can share the HOPE of their great reward!

Then when we see the page showing Jesus’ feet standing on the Mount of Olives, we can SHOUT for we know how this story is going to end (I may have peeked at the last chapter!!)
We will indeed SHOUT at the coming of our King of Kings, and we can glory in the HOPE that WE will spend all eternity with Him and all of our brothers and sisters, in the NEW HEAVEN AND EARTH!
